Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy is a method of alternative medicine that uses essential oils to promote physical and psychological well-being. Although aromatic oils have been used since antiquity, modern aromatherapy developed in the eary 20th century with the invention of techniques to distill volatile liquid plant materials.

Application is done by three methods: Direct inhalation, aerial diffusion, and topical application. Direct application is typically used to treat respiratory problems, while aerial diffusion is used to create a pleasing aroma. Topical application is used for massage as well as treating skin disorders.

Great care must be used when using essential oils because of their highly concentrated nature. Skin irritation can occur and some oils have been implicated in some medical conditions. For most topical applications, essential oils must be diluted with a carrier oil to avoid adverse reactions. Pregnant women are generally advised to avoid the use of essential oils because of potential problems. Essential oils can also be toxic for some pets, especially cats.
