Feng Shui
Dating back over 3,500 years, feng shui is an ancient Chinese method of aesthetics that seeks to improve one's quality of life by attracting positive qi (often spelled chi in English). It draws on the laws of the heavens and Earth to create an environment that promotes mental and physical well-being by providing a physical space that is in harmony with all things.
Feng shui, which literally translates as "wind-water" uses a special compass called a Loupan to detect the flow of qi in a given space. Once the flow of qi is determined, objects and structures can be placed in harmony with this natural flow.
Aside from its rather mystical nature, feng shui does seem to create environments that are aesthetically very pleasing. This has led to widespread popularity with Western interior designers and even some architects.
